Ring in the New Year With These 5 Push Notification Tips

With only two weeks left in the year, it’s likely things are already swinging with holiday preparations and trying to get everything squared away before December 31st. If you haven’t already, now is the time to plan out your holiday and New Year’s push notification campaign. What do you want to say to your customers? What kind of special offers will you communicate? How will you relate your product to the spirit of the season? Here are a few of our top tips for how to wish your users a Happy New Year, and boost mobile engagement to boot!

1. Send Seasons Greetings!

It’s a time of the year when everything comes at you fast, but there’s always time to spread some holiday cheer. A quick, personalized “Happy Hanukkah from all of us!” or “Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!” can do wonders. Even if you’re not actively promoting any product, it’s a good way to remind your user of your app. And while you probably shouldn’t expect any real engagement from them over the hectic peak holiday times, you’ll be at the top of their mind during the lazy downtime after all the relatives go home.

2. Offer Help With Their New Year’s Resolutions

If there’s one tradition associated with ringing in the New Year, it’s making a list of resolutions. Whether to exercise more, get a better job, get more organized, or practice more self-care, everybody likes to see January 1st as a blank slate, fresh on their way to becoming a “new person.” And now is the time to offer your help to keep those resolutions.

Obviously, certain mobile apps lend themselves better to this than others. If you’re a fitness app, then you can send push notifications offering motivation for them to stick to their new workout routine. Or if you’re a nutrition app, you can suggest different diet regimes your user might want to try after the excess of the holidays (vegetarian, low-carb, paleo, etc.). You can ping them with ideas for meal plans and healthy recipes.

If you’re a different kind of app, you may have to get more creative. Are you a streaming service? Why not suggest a language-learning podcast, or a documentary about great historical figures that your user can get inspired by? If you’re a financial app, direct your user to your product that will help them get their budget under control. A mobile game? Send them an invitation to de-stress by playing one of your most soothing games.

3. Engage Them With New Year Nostalgia

Yes, the new year is a time to look ahead and think about the future. But it’s also when people take stock in what they’ve done in the previous year. This can be an opportunity to engage your user with the great time they’ve had using your app. Think of how every year Facebook offers a short video of most-liked highlights from a person’s timeline.

Remind your user of why they downloaded your app, with a quick run-through of their high scores if you’re a mobile game. If you’re a travel app, perhaps a notification like, “This time last year, you were looking forward to your vacation in Aruba. Where will we take you this year?” If you’re a money-managing app, give them a quick overview of how their finances have changed, or how much they have saved with you. Music app? Give them a flashback of their top ten favorite albums of the year. And so on.

4. Kick the New Year Off With a Loyalty Program

January is the optimal time to start cultivating customer loyalty. Obviously, if you offer a bundle of benefits and services for a flat fee, the sooner a user joins up the more value they’re going to get out of it. If you’re an eCommerce app, offer your loyal user free shipping, discount codes, and early-bird access to flash sales. It’s likely your users will be burned out from excess shopping, so try offering them deals that will last through January. If you’re having any end of the year sales, let them know!

If you’re a streaming app, you can offer your user premium content at discounted rates. Mobile games can offer access to secret levels or in-game prizes or swag that can provide a heightened gaming experience. Do you have certain competitors you want to come out ahead of? Remind your user why your app is the one to stick with… and then prove it.

Think of the most iconic New Year’s scenes. What do they involve? Champagne, sparklers, fireworks, confetti. There are emojis for all of those things. It’s a small detail, but it really helps set the mood.

Offer a toast, and a hope for good luck in all things. Accompany it with a digital bottle of champagne! 🍾
